I'm a huge Laurann Dohner fan. Her books are typically great, with interesting plots, strong and charming characters, and steamy sex. I like all that! The good stuff: interesting conflicted, complex characters. I especially enjoyed the history of the two main characters. It made for a fascinating arc of development. I also really like the basic plot. Genetically altered people were trying to build new lives in the face of some public fear. I also really liked a lot of the secondary characters. I can definitely see some new storylines will come from them, and I look forward to that. The not-so-good stuff: the unnecessary emphasis on whether Fury might hurt his mate, Ellie. The unnecessary emphasis of characters diving into their sex life. The super frustrating overkill on removing Ellie from Fury, even by his friends. After the 3rd or 4th time, I almost stopped reading. That nonsense with the spy nurse towards the end was particularly grating. Also hard to swallow...the endless portrayal of virtually all humans as bigoted, racist, stupid creatures willing to perform any act of violence. I noticed this was a little heavy handed in some of the authors other series, particularly the Cyborg series, but it could be more forgiven there as part of the plot. Not so much here.I'm debating reading the rest of the series. I love the characters, love the worldbuilding, and let's face it, no one can write a sex scene like Laurann Dohner. I'm just not sure I can get through the meanness of the humans, and the bleakness of that. Maybe it's because the news is so full of that blackness. I read to escape a lot of that. But I really adore Laurann Dohner, so we'll see.

I bought this on a whim. I have not really read much species-type romance. I do, however, love reading reviewer comments almost as much as the book itself. I saw some really noteworthy comments this time so my review will be a bit different than usual and **MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS**.General Comments/ Concerns:I was shocked to read so many people suggested that this series was plagiarized from Lora Leigh's Breeds series. I haven't read that series so I can't tell you if the accusations are true. I am disappointed, though, that so many accusations were made, especially since this book was more expensive than the books I usually buy. If it proves true I will never buy from this author again. Some comments suggested the incidents and threats of rape were too high. I could definitely agree with this-- once or twice is shocking but after that it begins to lose effect and feels more like the plot device that it is (when tiny and half-pint arrive I think I actually rolled my eyes at their background). Other comments mentioned bad grammar and editing. I also agree with this; it is not nearly to level it should've been for such a pricey book. However, the book was interesting and readable enough despite this. Other comments centered on bad/choppy dialogue, superficial or one-dimensional villainy, and new species attributes functioning at the whim of the plot. The worst offender for bad dialogue was Justice. Nearly everything that character said was phrased oddly and was super short. But, I am reluctant to consider this a flaw as the NS are new to language and are still learning. Some of the best book moments occur when Ellie is teaching NS people about humans. As to the villains I agree here as well. The is no question that Mercile and HPH are evil (and perhaps the 1st Homeland director). And they are pretty one-dimensional. The best villains in this book are the ones that aren't so black and white-- the head of human security (well-intentioned but power hungry), the NS haters (NS who justifiably fear or dislike humans), and the media who spread truth and misinformation alike. Finally, I also have to agree that the NS attributes do feel a bit plot-devicey at times. Particularly, when NS people are interrupting intimate moments between the mains. One poster commented that the NS were supposed to be able to smell emotions so why couldn't they tell that there was no fear present when they find (and interrupt) the mains engaging in kinky sex. I also found this a bit weird, but not right away. It was after the next interruption that I thought, "why are they always being interrupted by NS people?" It became a bit ridiculous how many times it happened and how often Ellie was seen naked by other people. But, it didn't entirely stop me from enjoying the book.My Views/Comments Straight from the Book:My 1st thought was, "holy crap! the heroine just killed a guy!" And then she framed a victimized person for her crime. I wasn't sure I was ever going to like her as a heroine, but as the book progressed I did grow to like her. I really liked the NS male who was the MM. He always acted true to his nature. I also liked how the relationship between the mains began with lust and trust, became complicated by MMs sense of betrayal and need for vengeance, and was only sorted after weeks of daily conversation and bonding. Some of the best moments of the book had very little to do with the romance. The reintegration into society, the NS education, NS-human politics, and NS funding problems all provided great opportunities for fascinating world building. The only thing I really disliked about the book was the constant interference in the main relationship by outside NS males. It happened so often that it was really annoying and felt contrived. Because it was an impediment to their relationship, it also managed to shift focus away from actual villains in the story. So why 4 stars? I feel like the flaws of this book (any accusations of plagiarism aside) just aren't that major. I read prolificly and have come across so many books that were far worse than this one. I actually really liked a lot of the book. I plan to read Leigh's series and the next book in this series and decide after that whether to continue to support this author. 4 stars.

I first read FURY back in 2011, and while I’ve read it two or three times since then, the last time I read it was over three years ago. So when I woke up recently thinking about this book and not able to get it out of my head all day, I figured that was someone’s way of telling me to pick it up again. Who was I to argue?I’ve read every book in the New Species series, but it’s the first few books that I really love and that hold a special place in my heart. They say you never forget your first, and that’s true because this is one of those stories that I can remember everything in it and yet still enjoy reading it.I love Ellie, who is a very strong and brave woman but who also has a heart of gold. She hates what the New Species have endured before and after their freedom, and her only goal is to help them. I love Fury too, who, despite having lived a horrific life since birth at the hands of humans, is willing and able to put his trust in them now that he’s free. He might be an alpha male, but there’s also this childlike innocence about him.FURY is told in dual POVs and while it’s part of a series, the books can be read as stand-alones as each book is about a different couple. There are a couple of scenes that involve r@pe and gently coerced consent, so if those things greatly bother you or could be triggers, consider yourself warned.

Some say he’s half man half fish, others say he’s more of a seventy/thirty split. Either way he’s a fishy bastard.
