Review

“Wood and Burchielli gut-wrenchingly portray the chaotic reality of life in a war zone.” — THE WASHINGTON POST   “DMZ is incredible. It is addictive and brutal — a perfect antidote to the flag-waving Fox News broadcasts of the War on Terror.” — CHICAGO SUN TIMES   “The dramatic images recall the nightly news, and the stories of war-zone life ring true. Grade: A-” — ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY   "Burchielli's outstanding art really sells the story by intensifying familiar urban grunge into a Third World-like battle zone... This book is a disturbing, challenging success." — PUBLISHERS WEEKLY   "Wood's captivating series... combines the thrill of a summer blockbuster with the dire realities of war and dose of social/political commentary. Must-see series!" — USA TODAY

Having read all the paperback trades of this series I will say now having the first 12 issues in hardcover format is an absolute joy. The book is built well and although a bit larger that's not a bad thing as it really lets the gritty street art style of the book shine. As for the story itself, comics do not get much better then this. A man who signs up to be an intern photographer finds himself the as the main reporter in the hottest on-again/off-again war zone in the country: Manhattan, NY. As much a love letter to NYC as it is a look at war, Brian Wood weaves a complex tale of what goes on behind the glossy images of war given to us by the media and government and shows what it's like to really live in a war zone and although deadly at times it's not all that bad all the time. A knowledge of the city itself only enhances the enjoyment of the book as streets, landmarks and slang are used constantly but even if you've never been Wood's main character learns about the inner workings of the city like you will so by the end of this first volume you will already have a rough sketch in your head about where things are and how to get around. I cannot heap enough praise on this title, it's one of the ones that got me into the medium when I was younger and now these deluxe editions are a great chance for everyone to finally get a feeling of what it would be like to have a modern battlefield in our own backyards.

Brian Wood is a brilliant writer and DMZ Deluxe v1 hooks the reader in right off the bat. Richardo Burchielli does an excellent job depicting Wood’s distopian Civil War. This New York City is wreckage and “walk-at-your-own-risk” in the middle of a fight between the US govt and the Free States of America. Not only does this brutal depiction play into an overarching story but main character Matty Roth finds himself caught up in the bigger picture while trying to establish himself a on-site journalist. Matty tends to focus on the human stories and the individuals caught in the crossfire but his “power” as a journalist is often trying to be co-opted by both sides of the war.Volume 1 is Matty’s journalistic toss into the deadly deep end of the crossfire. It focuses on Matty simply trying to survive his new home. The intro into the world of New York as a De-Militarized Zone is encapturing. The characters are what make it though. The people Matty meets along the way become just as interesting as Matty. This book is an great first scoop of the flavor this series is.

Couple quick notes: This review is not about the story content -- that is easily 5 stars. Also my issues are not just reflective of DMZ book one, these issues are systemic with books 1-5.Cheap overall quality. The pages are glued into cheap, thin, flimsy cardboard. Significant amount of gutter loss, you'll be tearing at the seams to see the art and text in some places. The only reason to get this over the TPB is if you're OCD about collecting HCs over TPBs. Nothing "Deluxe" about this.

No superheroes. No aliens. No power suits. This is a straight forward character book and a damn well written one at that. Yes it's about war, the second U.S.A. Civil War to be exact, but don't let the war aspect put you off of this book. The main character is very likable and the situations are realistic to the point of never really knowing what's coming next, a handshake or a headshot. I'll be buying the Volume 2 Deluxe Edition when it's released.

Gritty artwork. A naif lost in DMZ Manhattan. A reporter without a clue. A populace living hand to mouth between two armies. A propaganda channel called Liberty. Life is cheap. But more real when death is all around. Student nurse Zee is the heart of the city, but reporter Matt may just be its guts. War is Hell, but damn if it isn't compelling. I want more. No, I need more.

This is so about our time, our issues, our fears, and the disconnect between what makes sense and what is happening. I love this.

Haven't finished the series but this first vol was a good read plus I got a great deal and received it well packaged

the author writes that this isn't a pa or dystopian work, but fans of those genre will very much enjoy this series. Great value for great work. highly recommend.

Some say he’s half man half fish, others say he’s more of a seventy/thirty split. Either way he’s a fishy bastard.
