This guide will help you escape the hoards of tourist, the crappy "Westernized" versions of local dishes, and the garbage souvenirs. Even better, 10% of the sale of this guide goes back to Isla Holbox (a group of volunteer veterinarians).
My kids wanted adventure - they are 8 and 10. Holbox was perfect for me to feel comfortable and safe and for them to be wild and free. We rented bikes that they rode through town and on the beach. We gave them each a few pesos on Friday and Saturday night for the carnival in the central square. We also let them explore the sandbar while we sat on shore - having the chance to talk uninterrupted with my husband is a rare treat.I don't think we would have gone if I hadn't found this book - I can't tell you how much we needed a trip like this. We've been researching trips to Mexico, I had this huge Lonely Planet guide and could not figure out where to go. I wanted some place that would feel comfortable and not too crazy, but not be too sleepy or boring either. Then I found this guide - my Lonely Planet only had a page on Hotbox so I hadn't really gotten any sense of why I would go there. This guide is beautifully written and insightful. Highly recommend!
This guide provides a fantastic poetic and practical perspective on visiting Isla Holbox over the winter holidays. In some ways, it's a typical travel guide: what to eat, where to stay, what to see. In many other ways, the writing conjures beautiful imagery that inspires visitors to observe and think about Isla Holbox carefully even if they never visit: a Christmas festival, the solitude of a walk, the instant intimacy between fellow travelers, the experience of a scientist and her family encountering their new surroundings.
I wish a guidebook like this existed for everywhere I want to travel! Unlike normal guidebooks, which sometimes feel like listings of businesses with a fact or two thrown in, this little book conveys the true flavor of the author’s experience on the island, plus has helpful information for planning my own trip. It’s written with such beautiful detail that you feel like you’ve gone on a mini vacation yourself.
E. A. Farro has written a beautiful, personal guide to a dream vacation spot. I went to Tulum about 15 years ago and it was like a hidden paradise. Isla Holbox seems like the next place like this (now that Tulum is more developed). I hope to be able to travel there and if I get to I would use this enchanting guidebook.
This is the guide I have been waiting for! It's personal, accessible, and heartwarming. I am looking forward to more.
