Having read all the Quinn series, Cameron's debut Arliss, U. S. Marshall series sets up story lines sure to ensnare his loyal readers and new ones alike in future books. Having lived in S.E., AK for more that 12-years, I can relate to what some say are the "odd goods." Cameron's description of life style, people, land and sea in this part of Alaska is spot on. The story reads fast and easily followed, not too many characters and sub-plots to keep track of. As to the sage, "Grumpy," I think Cameron needs to do a retro "Stars Wars-esque" back story about him. What a hoot that'd be. We shall see...
I am more into Special Ops, Seals, etc., than mysteries. However once I got into this story, which I purchased because of Cutter's life in the military, I became more interested in the plot. There was a little more violence than I like, I.e. gutting a body & filling it with rocks, which nearly made me stop reading & deleting it from my Kindle, however, curiosity got the best of me & Ip wanted to see if Carmen Delgado would survive. As it was I finished the last half of the book in one sitting, finishing it at 5am.
Although there were many interesting characters in this book I did not like the Arliss Cutter character. He's too macho, immature, and kind of a jerk with serious anger management problems. Also, the killer is mentioned near the end of the book without the reader given enough information to determine who the killer was himself. Novels usually have an A story (the major story) and a B story (a subplot). Determining who the killer was should have been the A story instead of the B story in this novel.
When I first started this book, the setup of all the characters and predicaments of each of them was a tad slow. Once I settled into it, though, and everything started moving and situations were being resolved, I didn’t want to stop until I finished. Good plot and lots of interesting people. Arlie’s Cutter is a tough dude and one you want on your side.
I was concerned when we veered from Jericho Quinn to a new guy. But, as always, Marc Cameron does not disappoint! I really enjoyed meeting Arliss Cutter and re-visiting Alaska. Thrilled to not only have Jericho Quinn’s adventures to enjoy but also Arliss Cutter. Absolutely love Marc Cameron’s books, all of them.
Could not put this book down. Various host of characters fleshed out the story. Kept me guessing. Recommend it. Looking forward to the next one.
The character's fly fast and furious with great individuality.Didn't figure out the culprit until the end.One book you won't put down.
Excellent vacation read. The characters are very interesting and the plot twists keep you guessing. I really like Cutter and Lola and look forward to the next book.
