This book meets all of my expectations and then some. Each time I open this amazing book, I am thrilled by the astonishingly lovely artwork. Since I am not a 'witch' per se, and am currently studying druidry, I have found the chapter on the "Magick and Folklore of Trees" to be exactly what I needed. Dugan includes informative sections about angels, astrology, and sabbats. The author's experiences with herbs, flowers, faeries, and the moon come through with charm, grace, and wisdom. I especially love the "Garden Witch" tips, again, not having much knowledge of the subjects myself. There are spells, charms, and blessings of all types, which I find interesting as well. There is practically something for everyone in this handy little book!
The book is about an idea, a dream, a garden hideaway, the oldest magic. It doesn’t really create that feeling though. I thought the illustrations would be done in watercolour. They’re not, they’re very... not. In fact they barely illustrate the plants they are describing. No dreamy escapism, and also minimal plant science. Spells without history, origin, or explanation. They sound like they were fabricated in the mid-90’s. I’m just... not very impressed. And then I had to pay $8 to return it.
While much of the information can easily be found in other green witch books published by Llewellyn, what can't be reproduced is Ellen's charm and conversational writing style! I think most pagans can agree that no matter how experienced you are in the Craft, or how many books you've read from various new age publishers, books about witchcraft all eventually begin to sound the same. I own several of her books and greatly enjoy the stories about her family, coven experiences, etc. This little book packs in a ton of info to get you started and even has a chapter for the city witches who have limited outdoor space. Another neat thing is that she has dedicated an entire chapter to plants that grow well in the southwest, which may not be useful to all, but is not something commonly seen in green witchcraft books. Ellen has plenty of real world experience as a gardener, and give lots of practical advice for those new to growing and harvesting their own. This is by no mean a complete resource for the serious pagan herbalist but it's definitely a good beginner's guide for practical herbal magick (Sabbat, plant, deity associations, etc), folklore and scientific info. I suggest always fact checking info about herbs using 2-3 different sources before eating, using on skin, etc. Better to be safe than sorry.
I love this book ~ it quickly became a key aspect of my gardening experience and library. I've always loved growing herbs, flowers, and veggies but this book helped me plan my gardens better and learn more about how to work with what I have. It's a go-to book all through the year!
I really like this garden herbal book. It has lovely advice on laying out a garden, choosing color combinations, and planting by season. It has helpful feng shui tips and great information on the meanings of different plants and how they can be used in magic and in the garden. It is exactly the book I was looking for!
As someone who is planning on becoming a nature witch this book was very informative. I didn't realize it was the second book, so I'm going to buy the first book. I even started a second notebook for this book information. Very well written.
Years ago, I saw one of her books in a quaint little book shop and I was hooked. Simple, straightforward, no special gimmicks.... just down to earth natural craft. I am proud to add this to my collection.
The best way to describe this book would be to copy and paste the table of contents. Check it out in "look inside," and you won't be disappointed when the book arrives if you like what you see on the list. Each section stands alone, but is not afraid to reference the others. Thus it is easy to read whichever section draws your heart without becoming confused by "missing something." These sections are also very clearly written and somewhat insightful. Highly recommended to anyone who desires to read about the topics in the table of contents.
