About the Author
Sharon Shinn has published more than twenty-five novels, one collection, and assorted pieces of short fiction since her first book came out in 1995. Among her books are the Twelve Houses series (Mystic and Rider and its sequels), the Samaria series (Archangel and its sequels), the Shifting Circle series, and the Elemental Blessings series. She lives in St. Louis, loves the Cardinals, watches as many movies as she possibly can, and still mourns the cancellation of “Firefly.â€Molly Knox Ostertag grew up in the forests of upstate New York and read far too many fantasy books as a child. I’ve read most of Shinn’s books but I’ve been lukewarm about her science-fiction and I’m not really a graphic novel person. I wasn’t excited about this until I saw the artwork for the opening pages. Then I had to read it.Shattered Warrior is set on a planet that has been invaded by aliens who care little for the human population. There’s a post-apocalyptic vibe to the way society and infrastructure has crumbled: failing farmland, gangs roaming the city streets, people sent to the mines are never seen again.Colleen’s family are all dead or missing. She lives alone in what’s left of the family estate, works in a Derichet-controlled factory, and has convinced herself that she’s better off not caring about anyone. And then she’s reunited with her seven year old niece.I loved the worldbuilding, how expressive everyone’s faces are and how much the story relies on the pictures to convey information. I loved reading it again and picking up the visual details that I hadn’t noticed first time round! There are a couple of aspects that I suspect would have been explored more in a prose-novel (such as why one character holds to pre-invasion ideas of class in the way he does) but this doesn’t really matter, because the focus is on Colleen and her journey is captured well. I really liked the balance between action and emotion. The story is as much, if not more, about the personal choices and connections Colleen makes as it is about the ways she physically rebels against the Derichets.I also appreciated the way the story handles some of the darker aspects of this world - they’re not ignored but neither are they allowed to dominate. This is a story about hope.I would love a sequel, preferably a companion story focusing on someone else, but it doesn’t sound like anything like that is planned at this stage and that is okay.I hadn't bought a graphic novel ebook before. The Kindle app is great for reading graphic novels, much better than I expected it to be - zooming in is easy and there's the option of scrolling through one panel at a time.
While graphic novels aren't usually my 'thing', I am a fan of Sharon Shinn, so I bought this. The storyline is timeless: a band of guerillas from many different classes are fighting for their freedom from harsh overlords (Starwars, anyone?) in a distopian landscape, while two people find love, fighting for the cause. In this case, the world has been invaded by powerful aliens who force the subjected citizens to exploit their planet's mineral wealth, regardless of the effects either on the planet or the health of the citizenry. This novel does bring other new elements to this standard plot, but fear of spoilers prevents me from going into them. The drawings are very good, and the manner in which they portray tense moments in the story are well done. Since I am no expert in graphic novels, I have no basis upon which to make a comparison to others of this genre, but I thoroughly enjoyed this one, and the fact that the ending, while complete, leaves room for sequels makes me hope for further adventures.
Interesting concept and I enjoyed the art. It was great to have so many different types of characters play prominent roles. Good diversity of race, gender and inclusion of non heteronormative / inclusive and varied roles for women and men. Women fight and plan. *spoiler* Jann cooks and makes a home for partner and child. But some of the writing at pivotal points was romance novel-y and canned dramatic. I get that its war time and stakes are high, but it's surprising how corny some of the dialogue is against a decently bloody plot. Wasn't my thing. But I can be particular. *spoiler* I was also uncomfortable with the treatment of Angit at the very end. Why take the one enemy character who has some non rapey depth to him and take away his redeemability? Oh so we can blow him up without moral recourse! Nah.I think this was Sharon Shinn' s first graphic novel and to that i say keep writing! I stayed until the good guys were largely compelling, i enjoyed the concept, diversity and art. As small as this might be, here is my bit of true corn- i know birthing as is just that - labor, critiques are easy.I look forward to shinn's subsequent stuff. A tightly plotted and tension-filled story of alien occupation, revolution and romance. Colleen Cavenaugh is a tough and tender hero with all the chops necessary to wade into the resistance and navigate the politics and high stakes dangers of combating both the alien occupiers and street gangs. Her pairing with Jann is a delicious love-in-wartime love affair that is believably uncertain and appealing. The art work: Amazing, expressive and subtle, it seems the perfect expression of the tone and world. Highly recommended for science fiction fans who enjoy adventures set on other worlds where characterization is central, transcending even the dramatic plot.
If you like Shinn's other work, than you'll like this as well. The story is absolutely covered in all of Shinn's trademark favorite archetypes. Ostertag's art really brings the story to life. The mythology Shinn brings to this world is sweet, and made me want to know more about it.
This is a wonderful story, beautifully written and drawn! I don't read graphic novels as a rule, but I loved this one, and would read more like it. Terrific science fictional adventure, sad, scary, grim, satisfying. It deserves a wide audience.
