Review
"Choosing Death is like a time-travel machine, so damn honest and real. It is a rare heartfelt document of a special underground musical movement, a trip back to the formative years of my life. Dive in and enjoy the proper story of this passionate international scene." --Tomas Lindberg, At the Gates"Albert Mudrian, our disciple of all that is heavy and extreme, definitively documents this period of blissful cacophony for all to behold. Play fast or die!" --Shane Embury, Napalm Death"This is the Bible right here." --Scott Hull, Pig Destroyer

From the Inside Flap
In 1986, the idea that death metal and grindcore would ever impact popular culture was unimaginable. Yet soon this barbaric amalgam of hardcore punk and heavy metal came to perpetually define the musical threshold of extremity. Initially circulated through a scattered tape-trading network of underground thrillseekers, bands rose from every corner of the globe and death metal and grindcore spread faster than a pandemic plague of undead flesheaters. By 1994, the genre's most prominent labels had sold well over a million death metal and grindcore albums each. Choosing Death: The Improbable History of Death Metal & Grindcore examines the rise, fall, and resurrection of death metal and grindcore through the eyes and ringing ears of the artists, producers and label owners who propeled the movements. "I thought of death metal and grindcore as a return to a more extreme punk," writes the BBC's John Peel in his foreword. "This music was another step into outlaw territory beyond any aggressive music heard before."

Seemingly well-researched book about the birth of death metal (and make no mistake, this book is about death metal first and foremost -- it covers grindcore only to the extent that Napalm Death, Repulsion, Terrorizer, etc helped kickstart DM). I agree with other reviewers who state that the book focuses mainly on a small group of very influential bands: Napalm Death, Carcass, Morbid Angel. There are of course other bands discussed, but none so much as those three. Personally, I'd have liked to see more material on the Swedish bands, and other Americans like Possessed, Autopsy, Atheist, etc. Also, there's only cursory material on death metal after the mid-90s. Still, if you want to know how death metal started, this book gives a good account.I will say there is FAR TOO MUCH DETAIL about the business side of things here. Readers will get everything they ever wanted to know about Napalm Death's dealings with their labels -- but if you aren't in the band, worked with the label, or have an itch to be an A&R hound for underground metal, you'll probably do like I did, and skim over large portions of this book.A better written book was Daniel Ekeroth's history of Swedish Death Metal, which seems a lot more personal, and intergrates ideas and inspirations among bands much better.
Very cool book. Straight from all the horses' mouths. I learned a lot I did not know, and was reminded of a lot I did. Great Summer read for extreme metal heads.
The only book about extreme metal that you need. Mudrian, a death metal/grindcore fanatic/expert, lays it all out in gory detail. This deluxe edition is an upgrade from the original (lots of new material) and well worth the money, even if you're a fan of the first edition.
Not sure myself but recipient liked it a lot
This book was very well written and it's such a great read that just keeps you reading on. Albert Mudrian did a great job with this project and I really hope they turn it into a documentary someday.
I thought that a lot of the information was good. They gave a good account of how death metal and grindcore came to be what they are. I would have liked to see more on Possessed and more on other bands that influenced the creation of death metal, such as Slayer. All in all though? Pretty good book. I have it on my kindle and in paperback edition
Really awesome book for anyone into classic hardcore and death metal, and its roots! Great pictures, and awesome (and informative) dictation.
A very detailed and well done work over the underground metal scene mid 80's to early 90's, which saw the birth of death metal and grindcore.
