oh boy here we go >_>So I'm a college student at k-state. Why review this book then? well I actually am enjoying this book. As a person who hates text books because they are fairly difficult to understand (and I have aspergers), this book is the first text book I'm enjoying.This book goes over a lot of stuff. From simple basics to some advance. I'm not sure who "Software Engineer" is but this book DOES go over the basics and moves towards some advanced stuff.is it worth the money?That depends on the person buying it. I'd say rent it first then buy it, take note you will be paying more in the end if you do that. I did do that and I have no regrets as a person who seriously enjoys programming.What does it come with?The book IF PURCHASED NEW, will have a code you can use to get access to some goodies like videos and files that have the code (i reccommend coding it down yourself for a better learning experience).Do you reccomend the book?Oh yes certainly. Again if your not a huge fan and just checking it out or simply taking the class to earn credits, just rent it. If your getting it for k-state and are just getting into the programming class, Start on chapter 2, that's where the coding begins so you'll get a better start for the semester.Why 4/5 and not 5/5?two things, it doesn't go over MVC (model-view-controller) which my prof does go over. and this book is paper back, whish it was hardback so that it would last me longer.
Damn good book. Covers everything so thoroughly sometimes the repetition is annoying, until you miss some key point (which shows up when answering the checkpoint questions and end of chapter questions) and you can confirm the answer in multiple places for slightly different situations. There is no way I could do all the programming exercises in the book in one semester unless I was three people that could type 75 word per minute only taking that one class. Never in my life have I been so satisfied with an instructional book. (And that includes the Ninth Edition Mike Meyers A+ Exam Guide, which also was fairly informative). I didn't use the online resources because I don't know if I need what is there, the resources expire, and I still have to take another semester.
This one was okay. It was my first programming course and textbook. As a complete novice, I feel like it did a pretty terrible job in the first few chapters where it explains "object oriented programming". To be frank, it would have been easier to skip that entire section and just get right into coding. All those examples and misleading metaphors about cookies or whatever were just really stupid.As far as learning Java, yeah, I guess it's there. Really, if you're a novice, the language doesn't matter. You just need to practice coding and experiment and tinker. They all work about the same. If you're not a complete novice, you don't need a textbook to get familiar with the language. Like most topics, you don't really need higher education to learn it, but most employers demand it, so here we are reviewing a textbook for a course that really isn't the best way to learn this topic in the first place.Good luck, I hope you get an A+.
Java was the first programming language I learned in college. This was the textbook that we used and it does an excellent job of teaching someone who has no experience with programming and teaching the concept of object oriented design. The author is able to explain details in layman term and you aren't left lost in translation. The programming challenges and questions are a great source to help reinforce the teachings of the book and I would highly recommend you do them. It's easy enough to go back through the chapters to figure out issues you encounter during the programming challenges or the questions. Although this textbook is covering java 5 and is pretty outdated now considering there is java 8; it can still serve as a solid foundation for someone getting into java.
This is a fantastic book to introduce one to the wonders of JAVA. I used this for a university course and so had a professional walk-through. However, this is an excellent source even for independent study. For each of the programming questions there is a youtube walk-through (search "java gaddis 2.1" for chapter two question one walk-through). This is a very large textbook and some concepts may be overwhelming, but with the supplimental video instructions anyone can learn how to code in JAVA
EDIT: Kindle edition released on February 6th. Sadly most students were forced to buy the physical book at the start of the spring semester. The sample covers the first chapter. The print replica looks great on the retina iPad with support for annotations, notes, etc. Looks like a decent investment, however, remember the appendices are not included. A $26 6 month subscription must be purchased from the companion site.This book is required for my Java 1 and 2 classes. I am about a month into the semester and this text is absolutely amazing! Each chapter of the book is laid out in such a way that makes learning Java a breeze. I also used Gaddis's Starting Out with C++ title which compared with this text has really helped me become a better programer and critical thinker.Each chapter lays out the next set of content to learn and introduces it a good pace ensuring these is no room for confusion. At the end of each chapter, there are about 20 program problems to work on that incorporate everything up to that point. These programs are amazing practice.My only complaint with the text is that the appendices are available online at a separate cost for 6 months of time access. If a new book was purchased, an access code is provided for this 6 months of access.The content can be saved locally so this isn't too much of an issue unless buying used.--Great coding book! I am hoping for Starting Out with Objective-C book in the future!
