As an educator who now stays home with my own kiddos, I’ve always practiced the habit of reading children’s books in advance, prior to sharing.After my many reads, I can assure you; Sally’s book accomplishes the very difficult task of engaging both children and adults.I was immediately enthralled with the beautiful photographs, and I LOVED the size comparison with the use of a penny. Brilliant! What a great way to provide perspective to these young minds. I also love that this book can and will be used for years to come - based on the fact that depending on the age, the children will be drawn to different ideas and images within the book.Upon introducing this book to my kiddo, he loved the photos and the colors. After only a couple reads, my three-year old was able to identify the egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, and the butterfly. He can also now identify a monarch, and knows that they lay their eggs only on milkweed plants.HOW COOL?!He’s also decided we need to plant some milkweed and nectar flowers so some monarchs can visit us. :)Between the exciting new interest in butterflies and the desire to interact with nature... I can’t think of a better reason to introduce this book to your kids and/or students!You’ll be amazed at what you learn, too!
I bought this book for my 3-1/2 year old granddaughter for Christmas. She made us stop everything and read it to her. After we were done she said, "I just love butterflies." Then her other grandma came over and she wanted her to read the book again to her. The pictures are just beautiful and what a wonderful way to tell the story of a monarch butterfly. 12/4/2018: I'm adding to this review because this has become my grandaughter's favorite book - she is four years old. Whenever I go over to her house it's out and her Mom said she loves it.
Very simple book, easy for young kids to understand. The photos are great and I love that they are real images.

How beautiful change can be when you approach it with the quiet eyes of intrigue. Nature provides a seedbed for learning. Her photography captivates the reader. Perhaps Dr. Stone is really telling us to live our life with curiosity; one never knows where we will land next!Filled with factual information, the readers will look at their garden through a new lens!
This wonderful book instantly took me back to kindergarten! To a big round table covered with brightly colored books in 'The Reading Room". Sometimes as punishment we were sent to be alone and quiet in the reading room. I remember a book with a snake and its long forked tongue on the cover that scared me away from that big table. Oh, how much fun it would have been to be In the readng room with this beautiful, educational, and peaceful book! Reading would have been lovingly linked to something so pleasurable. What a concept!
Beautifully photographed, written with nuance and grace. I wonderful book for kids, but perhaps for the "older" kid in your world. A subtle reminder of how imperiled the Monarchs are, it also highlights, gently, the profound changes we all experience in the life.
