Gardeners in the Pacific Northwest are lucky indeed. Ample rainfall, good soil, and moderate temperatures grant us a long and hospitable growing season capable of yielding an ever-changing menu of seasonal and hyper-local food. But how do you maximize that brief summer heat so your tomato dreams can come true? Which month should you sow the carrot or beet seeds? And come October, how can you make all those raked leaves work for you? In this straightforward and encouraging book, Lorene Edwards Forkner answers these questions while covering the many eccentricities of gardening in western Washington and Oregon, and southern British Columbia. Monthly planting guides show exactly what you can do in the garden from January through December. The skill sets go beyond the basics with tutorials on seed saving, worm bins, and more. This book is fantastic. I moved to Oregon with 40 years of California gardening experience. What a shock! Vegetables and other plants do not follow the same rules here, so I decided that I'd better learn all over again. When your tomato seedlings are looking peaked and most of your other things rot away or get eaten by slugs, it's really easy to get frustrated. This book lays it all out. With a chapter-by-chapter/month-by-month guide, it tells you what to plant when inside or outside. It tells you what you might be able to grow in a greenhouse and has all the tips you'll need to enjoy what WILL grow here. You may not get great big beefsteak tomatoes, but you might be eating great lettuce and peas all year. This book is packed with all kinds of information to help you succeed at vegetable gardening in this challenging environment.
This book has helped immensely with our garden in the Pacific Northwest. It takes out much of the guesswork by giving the reader detailed instructions on what to be planning, planting, and harvesting for each month of the year. It's easy to navigate and we had proven success this year with a bumper crop of peppers, tomatoes, onions, artichokes, garlic, kale, and squash.I tried a few other gardening books when I was looking to get more serious about gardening, and this has so far been my favorite by leaps and bounds. This book now lives on our coffee table where we can reference it easily and talk about what we should be doing next with our garden. I would recommend this to anyone trying to get into gardening in the Pacific Northwest.
I own a ton of books about gardening and growing food, and this is my new favorite. It's very well organized and designed and specific to PNW growing season and plants that do well here. It's written by someone who actually lives in the PNW as well, unlike other location specific books I've purchased. Incredibly happy with my purchase and I'm sure I'll buy this as a gift for friends.
Looks like an ok basic book specifically for the northwest, disappointed that there were not actually month tabs on the book. The tabs are just printed on the cover.
I'm from SoCal and live in Oregon now and last years garden was a total disaster. I now realize that I was doing everything wrong and this was so helpful to start my new garden.
I like the month by month chapters what to do for the month. It lists things I have forgotten to do in a timely matter in the past. It is a time saving, get it done ahead of time reference. So far the book is right on for the Pacific Northwest. Thank you.
Really nice layout to make the information you need easy to find. A book that you will pick up with every season and crop change.
If you live in the PNW, this is a must.
