When our daughter, who is an only child, brought this book home from school, we had no idea it would change our lives. It's a sweet story, and just a fun read. But as we read through the story, we looked around. No brother. No sister. No children on our block or anywhere us in our neighborhood. No pets. Instant guilt trip created by the author. Due to this book, our daughter won the ongoing argument about getting a dog. Note: This book did not inspire my daughter to go so far as to pick up after her dog. However, we're glad she read it, and she's a had a dog ever since.

My son needed this book for a second grade literacy project. The story is about Henry who wants a dog and Mudge who grows into a very large dog. The art is cute and inspiring and appropriate to the age level and story.Henry doesn't have siblings so his parents get him a dog. Mudge becomes his best friend and goes everywhere with him. One day Mudge runs away and Henry has to go find him. After that, Mudge stays home. The project made my son look for a connection between the story and his own life. He said "the story tells me that I shouldn't run away from home and that I really need a dog for a best friend."

My son enjoyed this book. He actually had already read other books in the series but wanted to go back and read the first book before reading more. We will be continuing to purchase more for him to read in this series as it keeps him interested to read more.

Absolutely love almost all the Henry and Mudge books. This one is no exception. Oddly, in my 30+ years teaching, I'd never come across this one! Love Cynthia Rylant. She doesn't talk down to kids, yet the books remain readable. There are a couple I don't find amusing—but the kids love them all! That makes them a winner in my book. :D

I love how simple the language in this book is and I use it often for my special education reading groups. The kids love the plot and have a lot to say about getting a dog and being lost. The pictures are really helpful and make picture base comprehension activities easy to teach. My favorite part is that it is broken up into short chapters making it more age appropriate despite the simplicity of the text.

This, the first in the Henry and Mudge series by Cynthia Rylant, is a heart-warming early reader about a single child, Henry, who asks his parents for a dog and gets to pick out a puppy. The puppy grows into a 180-pound dog, Mudge. The seven very-short chapters, some from Henry's point of view, some from Mudge's point of view, illustrate how much each loves the other, and how each helps the other. A great early reader not just for children who love dogs, but also for those who might have no interest in pets -- they can still enjoy and appreciate the story.

Adorable book, my daughter used to read Henry and Mudge books at the library, now I'm buying them for my grandson.

My children liked Henry & Mudge and I bought the book for my great niece and great nephew. Reading it again reminded me what a great series these books are for bedtime stories.
