I've been a big fan of Evening's books -- haven't bought them all, but maybe a half dozen. Generally his books are the best comprehensive overviews of the Adobe software. However, I have two reservations. The first is the bad side of comprehensive. This book is very detailed not only on the use of the programs but on what I might call meta-issues -- how and why the various manipulations work. Because of all the detail (and the huge size) this book is not suitable as a get-started or how to do X introduction. His Lightroom Transformations is much better suited to that. Or any of Scott Kelby's books (which tend to have the opposite problem -- not enough detail on important procedures and too much emphasis on how to do specific tasks). So if what you want is "everything you ever wanted to know about LR/PS" this is a great book. If you're a relative novice, it's likely to be a waste of money. As a reference book it's unsurpassed. The second problem is much more minor but more irritating. There is a long index, but if you don't know the exact name of what you're looking for, your search will likely be frustrated. Just to give one example: I have used LR/PS for well over a decade, and have my practiced ways of doing things. However recently I wanted to practice with what I recalled was the little dot you placed in parts of scene to manipulate exposure (and other details). The technical term is Target Adjustment Tool. Now if you don't know the name how are you supposed to look it up? Oh, just go to the part of the book that deals with exposure adjustments. Easy enough to find that. Well the TAT is mentioned, but at least in that part of the book never defined; nor is there a good introduction on what it is or how to access it. In a way this is an unfair criticism. As I well know from experience, indexing a book is tedious, boring, unfulfilling, and just plain hard. Professional indexers (which I'm sure the author used) are sometimes better, but unless they understand the likely fumbling around of the average user, they often miss important hints. And just for comparison Kelby discussed 15 ways (well, an exaggeration) of how to adjust exposure while only briefly mentioning the TAT, buried in a general paragraph. Anyway Evening has my sympathy, but that doesn't do much for the frustration. That said, it's important to remember that this is an endemic problem. So highly recommended provided you understand your needs and whether this book is likely to meet them. Five stars for doing well what it is intended to do. But it won't be 5 stars if you have different needs.

I bought this book both in paper back and in Kindle format purposely. I have bought many books by Evening and have found them to be quite complete and authoritative. The subject matter is surprisingly complex in a many areas. While the book is beyond other books in detail and very thorough, it is not flawless. I would mark the book ( in both formats) down to a 4.9 rating, because I believe he should address common failure modes, due to user misunderstanding, poor actions in selecting the proper tag syntax, and/or due to recovering from failures arising out of off-line storage exhaustion, the means to correct for poor tag hierarchy, and user faults. Once more, I feel he doesn't flag Adobe faults (both in code or help documentation). As an example, you are given the impression in the book and by Adobe that one can search for text in searchable metadata fields (what fields are these?). Another example is the misinterpretation of the "!" {missing} mark in the upper right corner which, in fact, has multiple meanings. The content of the book in hardcopy and in Kindle format is identical so far as I can tell. However, the index in the hardcopy is hard to use because the topic one is looking for might be embedded under another. The hardcopy has the advantage of making field comments or making actual bookmark inserts. The Kindle's advantage is one's ability to search for a given phrase or word, thereby, compensating for hardcopy book's shortcomings. This book requires one to read it from the beginning. It is not compendium of standalone, reference manual topics. In spite of the book's shortcomings, I like his book. Unlike other authors who race to be the first to publish a book on a new release (and missing major topic areas), the quality of Martin's efforts is shown by his completeness for including new features or concepts or insights from the Adobe development staff. All of these factors require post release time to get content correct. One final comment, the best way to learn, in my opinion, is to setup a throw-away LR catalog with junk pic images, and use it while reading Martin's material.
