Tabatha Coffey was born and raised in Adelaide, South Australia. She trained as a hairstylist at the Vidal Sassoon School in London, England. Tabatha moved across the Atlantic Ocean to RIdgewood, New Jersey (an upper class suburb in Bergen County across Manhattan). Tabatha stuck out like an oddity in the suburbs. Tabatha would have been more suited to Manhattan's Greenwich Village than Ridgewood, New Jersey. Tabatha writes about her life especially about her sexuality. Her candidness about being a lesbian is refreshing though. This book is about Tabatha's life from spending her childhood in clubs with drag queens to London and to New Jersey of all places. Tabatha build a successful hair salon in Ridgewood. Tabatha became a reality television personality. She became a fan favorite on the competition series, "Shear Genius." She would have her own series "Tabatha Takes Over" on Bravo. Her series was about helping struggling hair salons throughout the country. She has a new series about helping family businesses.Ironically, Tabatha is quite private about her personal life. She has unnamed female partner and still lives in New Jersey not far from Manhattan. This book comes complete with personal photographs and a touching tribute to her mother. Her mother had married an American and moved to Ridgewood, New Jersey. Tabatha writes about how September 11, 2001 affected her adopted hometown with the loss and trauma. She has become a Jersey girl though after living there since 1992. Tabatha could have moved to Manhattan but she chose to stay close to her mother and live modestly.
I never saw Shear Genius, but I became a Tabatha Coffey fan after watching "Tabatha's Salon Takeover." I was drawn to her because she looks great and is a no-nonsense businesswoman. This book covers Tabatha's transformation from a chubby kid in Australia strongly influenced by transgender women in strip clubs into a reality tv star who owns a successful hair salon in New Jersey.Even though Tabatha has a reputation for being abrasive, her book is quite inspiring. She discusses challenges she faced both professionally and personally and how she learned the importance of staying true to who she is. She's direct, honest, and not afraid to admit her own mistakes. If you like Tabatha on t.v. then you will probably like reading this book as much as I did.
Tabitha rocks. I remembered her from "Shear Genius" years ago. It was a great show, not sure why it no longer exists. I became addicted to her show "Tabitha Takes Over". I love her style, her talent, and her strong persona. She has emotional intelligence as well as being great in her field so I very much respect her. This book is part memoir with a little self help thrown in, in a good way. Her life is so interesting and I love her perspective of it all. I enjoyed this book immensely and then gave it to my mom to read and she told me she is so glad that I did because she is loving it.
This is a great book, Tabitha doesn't hold back on the details of her life, telling us in her straight to the point manner about her unusual childhood & how that helped shape her to grow into the strong, honest, successful women she is today. I have been a fan since first seeing her on "Shear Genius" , when she told off that crazy women who wanted to continue to use garden hedge trimmers to cut hair, exactly how insulting and wrong it was, to those of us in this profession who care about professionalism. I have enjoyed every part of this book, learning her history, how dedicated she is and how hard she worked to be where she is today, and the awesome background she has, who she trained with. All that gives her the passion she has for this creative business, & the right to be a "bitch" ( by her definition) when she needs to, and I hope the people she helps on her TV show realize how lucky they are that she shares her wisdom on how to be successful with them...this is a great book, interesting, good reading, & made me even a bigger fan, which I didn't think was possible.
Being a hairdresser i've always had a ton of respect for Tabatha and despite her abrasive nature i've always admired her strength and passion for the industry and have always enjoyed watching Tabatha's Salon Takeover! She always seemed to say what you were thinking but probably wouldn't ever verbalize for risk of sounding "bitchy".I like that this book was a mix of her childhood, her upbringing, the beauty industry, and her personal struggles. It was inspirational, and although I thought I knew a pretty good amount about her considering I consider her a personal mentor of mine, I still had a lot of moments that I was WOW! having no idea, which was refreshing as some memiors I feel like are pieced together with a lot of information you already know simply from watching the news or subtly reading stories about them.Tabatha is tough as nails but with good reason, she's been through a ton and wants to see others succeed, which is admirable. I really enjoyed this memoir, and if you are in the beauty industry, or just a fan of Tabatha Coffey I would recommend this read; It's insightful, encouraging, and inspiring.
The prose is certainly not a masterpiece, but it was pleasant and interesting for something I wouldn't have gone for except as a guilty pleasure.Just as a word of warning there is some language applied to a marginalized group that, while it probably the way the folks depicted self identified to the author at the time, is definitely a slur now.
