After reading the first chapter, I wanted to binge read this book. Her characters are so authentic, that I felt I knew what motivated them. The workings of a pre-teens mind and their obsession with spots was real. Loved this book. A must read.
This book had me at line 1 with "Let me tell you a secret." The story is told largely from the viewpoint of Maggie Topper, a young 6th grade English teacher who, in addition to her regular class, also has agreed to tutor a young boy named Yuri whose health condition doesn't allow him to attend school with the other kids. We also learn about Sasha and Katya, Yuri's parents, who grew up in Kiev which made the book an interesting blend of contemporary and historical fiction. Alyson Richman's poetic prose drew me in and kept me turning the pages through this tender story of friendship and compassion and the lasting impact that great teachers can have on our lives.
I’ve read most of the author’s books. Our local Moveable Feasts is featuring Alyson this Friday. So I wanted to read her novel. I’ve really enjoyed her historical novels and was unsure how she would be in this genre. Anyone who has been an engaged teacher or just considering this career will not be disappointed..
I can’t say enough amazing things about this book. It tugs at the heart strings and weaves together a beautiful story that could only end one way. For Veteran teachers, it will make you remember why you chose to be a teacher! For sports fans, you will be amazed at the accuracy of the facts. For lovers of fiction.....this book will make your heart smile in a way that only Ms. Richman’s writing can do. And the reveal of the title will have you staring off into space with a smile on your face on how it all came together perfectly!
This was a Very touching read. It made me cry but it was also uplifting. It was sad but not depressing.
i have read all of her books and have never been disappointed. The book I just finished "The Secret of Clouds"was excellent also. I can't wait for her next book.
Great read! Really enjoyed this story. This is the first book I’ve read by this author but will definitely read more!
