I really like the concept of this book. You read a short paragraph, then it gives you the meaning of most words below you might not have previously encountered, but not all, so you do have to have a dictionary handy. The story is ok, and I like the fact that one of the characters is struggling with speaking French and makes common mistakes, and the other character is fluent. The story takes you to France and you learn the names of some cities which is helpful in other areas. It has a small glossary, and room for notes in the back, but I usually have a pad or notebook every time I read to record verbs, and phrases I later want to remember or practice. It's a good book for an highschool or beginning college student or someone who is studying on their own. Some basic knowledge of French is required. At times the imperfect and passé composé are included. There's suppose to be an MP3 with it, but I'm not sure how that works.(technology challenged!) I bought the next one, that takes place in past tense.
I always thought that the best way to learn a second language is by reading and listening. Grammar is important, but only when you reach a certain level at the language. This book can give you the opportunity to learn while having fun - and this is the best way to learning anything. For this reason I recommend it to anyone who is embracing in the journey of learning a second language. If the book was longer I’d give it 5 stars. I think the story is too short.
I found this to be a truly delightful book. The stories are well written and so enchanting, the Arthur draws you into each story almost effortlessly. Also, the stories are not overwhelmingly long and does not contain a lot of unnecessary words. The Arthur's choice of words are rich, descriptive, and deliciously appealing. This is an excellent book for any beginner looking to build their vocabulary and gain confidence in mastering the past tense. Read it, Digest it, Master it, and then go out and USE it!

Lovely and very pleasant read with elements of fantasy and style. Not just some simplified book for beginner-language-learners, but truly enjoyable stories that will make one feel like a real French speaker!
I have intermediate french skills and found Le Pendentif challenging enough to be of interest but not so much so that I was frustrated. I am 72, retired and improving my french.
I read this book in my french 2 class this year, and it was easy to follow along.
